( HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman released the following statements commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

"Decades after Dr. King's fearlessness in the face of injustice and racial inequality, his message of non-violence and optimism continue to resonate deeply throughout our communities and across this nation," said Governor Malloy. "Particularly at this time, as we struggle with the questions around building a stronger, safer, more just society, leadership at all levels of government can reflect on Dr. King's legacy. We are dedicated to ensuring access to the ballot box, economic justice, and educational opportunity for all citizens, and our work will continue to reflect this commitment."

"I will be thinking of Dr. King on Monday when I will have the privilege of witnessing President Obama take his second oath of office,"said Lt. Governor Wyman. "I strongly believe that if not for Dr. King's work, I would not have seen an African-American President elected in my lifetime. I also think Dr. King's convictions about empowering people and strengthening our communities are particularly relevant to us in government today. These difficult economic times have put incredible stress on so many people and families, and it is more important than ever that government helps provide a roadmap to prosperity for everyone."
