TUESDAY: LT. GOVERNOR WYMAN TO SPEAK AT EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION 150 th ANNIVERSARY EVENT AT STATE CAPITOL
(HARTFORD, CT) - Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman on Tuesday will give remarks at the 150 th Anniversary Celebration of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln, which signaled the abolition of slavery in the United States.
The event begins at 11 a.m. in the North Lobby of the State Capitol, 210 Capitol Ave.
Lt. Gov. Wyman's remarks will focus on how President Lincoln's courage in signing the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863 can provide inspiration and guidance for addressing challenges and inequities in society today.
The celebration is sponsored by The Amistad Committee, the legislature's African-American Commission, the Connecticut Freedom Trail Committee and the Office of the Secretary of State.
State Senator Toni Harp of New Haven will be the keynote speaker.
Other event highlights will include poetry readings, the ringing of the Capitol's Liberty Bell replica and performances by Minster Wayne Dixon and Mass Choir and The Sankofa Kuumba Drum Ensemble.
