Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas Brings Government to the Classroom

(Hartford, CT) - Secretary Stephanie Thomas recently visited the Connecticut State Community College Norwalk campus delivering an inspiring message to students about the power of civics and the importance of staying informed and involved in the democratic process. A proud Norwalk resident, Secretary Thomas shared her personal journey, becoming a small business owner and ultimately stepping into state government – highlighting the role that civic participation has played in her life.

Believing that government should meet people where they are, Secretary Thomas is deeply committed to grassroots engagement. She regularly visits communities across Connecticut to have direct conversations about civic participation. While she takes pride in returning to her community of Norwalk – where she has led initiatives like Connect & Cut, a program that brought civic conversations to local barbershops and salons, and the Lawn Signs Project, which repurposes lawn signs with nonpartisan civic messaging – her outreach spans the entire state. Through these efforts, she ensures that all Connecticut residents have the knowledge they need to engage in the democratic process.

“Our democracy works when people are informed, engaged and take action,” said Secretary Thomas. “Civic engagement isn’t just about voting - it's about understanding how government works, asking questions and making sure your voice is heard. That’s why I prioritize meeting people where they are, whether it’s on a college campus, at a local library or in a community center. I want to ensure that every person in Connecticut, knows they have the power to shape their communities and their future.”
