Provisional Ballots

In certain circumstances, you may be able to cast a provisional ballot when a candidate for federal office is on the ballot. A provisional ballot allows you to vote for federal offices only; it does not include candidates for state or local office.

To cast a provisional ballot, you must complete an application and attest, under penalty of false statement, that you are eligible to vote and are currently an elector in the town where you are voting.

After the election, the Registrars of Voters have six days to verify the information provided with each provisional ballot. Provisional ballots are kept separate from other ballots and are counted only after the Registrars confirm that the voter was eligible to vote.
