• 10 Principles of Mastery-Based Learning

  To help schools establish a philosophical and pedagogical foundation for their work, the Great Schools Partnership created the following “Ten Principles of Mastery-Based Learning,” which describe the common features found in the most effective mastery-based systems.

• Action Planning - Mastery-Based Learning

  The Cycle of Action is a simple tool developed to frame the critical steps schools take when engaged in an evidence-based, goal-driven school-improvement process designed to raise the educational achievement, aspirations, and attainment of all students.

• Communication - Mastery-Based Learning

  A variety of communications toolkits are available to assist schools and school districts in explaining the changes necessary to implement Mastery-Based Learning.

• Connecticut State Standards - Mastery-Based Learning

  Standards define the goals of education- what students need to learn- not the processes of education or how schools are structured or how they operate. In recent years, a guiding principle in K-12 standards has been to clearly define what students should know and be able to do through out their K-12 experience anchored in college- and career-ready expectations.

• Definitions of Different Types of Competencies - Mastery-Based Learning

  State standards provide the foundation—the grade-level learning progressions that teachers use to design their curriculum—but schools determine how standards will be implemented, including which standards must be met.

• Recognition and Excellence

  Recognition programs demonstrate respect for educators. Meaningful, thoughtful educator appreciation programs is about valuing efforts and having respect for who educators are and what educators do while giving students, districts and school communities public recognition and a sense of pride. The Talent Office is proud to be a part of the following state and national recognition efforts.

• Chronic Absence

  Good attendance is essential to student achievement! Research shows that absences add up and that good attendance is essential to student achievement and graduation. Whereas, chronic absence and truancy can be lead to school drop-out, academic failure and juvenile delinquency. By removing barriers to attendance, districts, schools and community partners can improve attendance.

• AENGLC

  AENGLC, more specifically AENGLC rank, is used in determining the state support percentages for reimbursement under adult education, school construction, pupil transportation and health services.

• Safe and Supportive Environments (Health Education)

  Guidance and resources for creating safe and supportive learning environments in schools.

• Homeless Education

  The federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act requires all school districts to ensure access to public education for children and youth experiencing homelessness and ensure success in school once enrolled.

• Spotlight on Connecticut

  Most of the following Connecticut schools and districts are members of the League of Innovative Schools (LIS) and are engaged in Mastery-Based Learning. LIS is a regional professional learning community for secondary schools committed to educational equity, student-centered learning and ongoing improvement.
