Teaching Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies

Preface

The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) recognizes the importance of fostering culturally responsive learning environments that honor the diverse histories and contributions of all communities. In alignment with the Comprehensive Plan for Education 2023–2028 and Connecticut’s commitment to equity and excellence, this resource page provides educators with tools and guidance to teach the histories, cultures, identities, and contemporary experiences of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.

This initiative aims to elevate curriculum offerings by supporting educators in delivering instruction that reflects the lived experiences of AAPI individuals—past and present—and promotes understanding, empathy, and cross-cultural awareness in classrooms across the state. Numerous professionals contributed to the development of these resources to support the inclusion and integration of AAPI in Connecticut K-12 curriculum. Special recognition is made to UConn's Department of Social and Critical Inquiry, Curriculum Lab led by Jennifer (JHD) Heikkila Diaz, UConn AAAS Activist in Residence and Dr. Jason Oliver Chang, UConn Social and Critical Inquiry Department Head. The Lab's financial and academic support fostered the growth of a community of educators and built new resources to aid in the goals of this initiative.

If you have additional materials that you think might help educators as these teach these important subjects, please forward them to the CT Learning Hub at sde.ctlearninghub@ct.gov.
