Dyslexia Awareness Campaign

The Connecticut State Department of Education’s Office of Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities has partnered with agencies from across Connecticut to advance a year-long Dyslexia Awareness Campaign featuring a series of coordinated activities designed to promote awareness and a shared understanding of dyslexia, with the goal of ensuring equitable student identification and support. On this page you will find information about the various activities, training and resources that are being highlighted as part of this collaborative work.

Family Night with Jordan Toma
In partnership with SERC

Come listen to motivational speaker Jordan Toma share his inspiring message for young students with disabilities and their families: "Turning our Struggles into Strengths." Jordan Toma is now a financial advisor turned speaker/coach from New Jersey who was diagnosed with ADHD, dyslexia, and auditory processing disorder. He struggled most of his younger years from a behavioral and educational perspective, until he was given the gift of an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). He now wears his learning disability like a badge of honor and wants everyone to know just how hard it was and how it shaped the person he is today.

We’re excited to invite you to a series of watch parties and discussions about films that showcase the importance of a teacher in the lives of students with dyslexia, the lived experiences of children, parents, and adults with dyslexia, and inspirational role models for students.

The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) is hosting a special education summit with the theme of “Belonging,” which will bring together, educators, families, students, as well as national, state and local leaders and experts to share perspectives on the status of special education in Connecticut. The CSDE will highlight current and future statewide initiatives supporting our families and educators in achieving positive outcomes for students with disabilities ages three through 22.

Hopeville: How to Win the Reading Wars
Captured Time Productions

Growing up with Dyslexia, Hopeville's Director, Harvey Hubbell V, faced numerous challenges in school, especially learning how to read. And he's nowhere near alone. This documentary stresses the importance of implementing evidence-based reading instruction by featuring three first-grade classrooms over the course of one school year in the 5th largest city in the state of Connecticut and a bright spot in The Reading Wars: Waterbury, Connecticut. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion on how to win the reading wars-you won’t want to miss it!
