Dyslexia Awareness Campaign

The Connecticut State Department of Education’s Office of Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities has partnered with agencies from across Connecticut to advance a year-long Dyslexia Awareness Campaign featuring a series of coordinated activities designed to promote awareness and a shared understanding of dyslexia, with the goal of ensuring equitable student identification and support. On this page you will find information about the various activities, training and resources that are being highlighted as part of this collaborative work.

Dyslexia Awareness Library Displays
In partnership with the CT State Library and Decoding Dyslexia-CT

Hot off the press! Thanks to the CT State Library, the Dyslexia Awareness display created by Decoding Dyslexia, which features facts, book lists and linked video resources, will soon be available to all 191 libraries statewide! Libraries will also be able to borrow a curated collection from the State Library that they in turn can lend to the public. Books in this collection include the Dr. Dyslexia Dude series by Dr. Shawn Robinson, the Molly’s Great Discovery series by Krista Weltner, and the second edition of Dyslexia Advocate by Kelli Sandman-Hurley.

Science of Reading Training Modules
In partnership with the Bureau of Special Education and SERC

Calling all special educators, remedial reading teachers, and administrators! If you are seeking professional learning and development opportunities to strengthen your knowledge of structured literacy, this series is for you!

Join Hill for Literacy for a series of online training modules featuring asynchronous and synchronous learning activities that delve into the Science of Reading and the structured literacy approach to reading instruction at the primary, intermediate, and adolescent levels.

Partially Compensated: A Virtual Watch Party
In partnership with the Bureau of Special Education and SERC

In 2016, Krista Weltner obtained a Master's in Fine Arts from the University of Connecticut, where she presented her master's project and short film, Partially Compensated, which was inspired by her experience with dyslexia. This short film has been seen in film festivals worldwide and has afforded her numerous opportunities to engage and advocate with others for a more inclusive world.

Through virtual streaming opportunities provided to Connecticut schools, students are invited to join Krista for a virtual viewing of her short film. Krista will also answer questions and engage students in a discussion about the arts.
