CSDE K-8 Model English Language Arts: In the English Language Arts Model Curriculum, an integration of informational and literary reading and writing is maintained across grade levels. In addition to building students’ ability to read and understand a variety of texts, the curriculum emphasizes the importance of dedicating sufficient time to writing. Each unit incorporates the Writing Standards and is designed to provide students with opportunities to produce and publish clear, coherent writing in a range of forms. The units also integrate social, emotional, and intellectual habits, as outlined in the Components of Social, Emotional, and Intellectual Habits: Kindergarten through Grade 12 document.

The units organize standards in a clear sequence within and across grades K–3 to support steady skill development. They reflect the complex, multidimensional nature of language by integrating key language components—such as phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics—with essential literacy skills, including phonological awareness, the alphabetic principle, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
