Unclaimed Property Overview

The Unclaimed Property Division safeguards unclaimed assets turned over to the Office of the Treasurer by businesses after they lose contact with a customer for a period of three to five years. The primary objective of the unclaimed property program is to reunite rightful owners or heirs with their property.

Unclaimed assets include bank accounts, uncashed checks, refunds, liquidated securities, and insurance proceeds. This property is turned over each year by "holders," which include banks, credit unions, insurance companies, brokerage firms, utility companies, and other businesses.
