Gov. Malloy Statement on Pope Francis’s Declaration That the Death Penalty Is Never Admissible
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement regarding the Vatican’s announcement that Pope Francis has approved formal alterations to the catechism to clarify that the death penalty, in the eyes of the Catholic Church, is unacceptable in all cases:
“Pope Francis wisely declared that the death penalty has no legitimate place in the justice system of any state or nation. I commend him for his wisdom, compassion, and leadership on this issue. In 2012 we recognized that the death penalty was an ineffective deterrent that disproportionately impacted communities of color. Our moral compass demanded that we put an end to such a cruel and unjust practice and I am proud that we were able to accomplish just that. I hope that Pope Francis’s actions help further the movement to abolish the death penalty in other states where this inhumane practice is still legal.”
