Gov. Malloy Statement on House Approval of Legislation Providing Wage Increases for Workers Who Care for People with Disabilities

Passage of This Agreement Will Help Avert a Costly and Disruptive Strike by Workers

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement in response to a favorable vote in the House of Representatives this afternoon to adopt legislation that will avert a costly strike and provide wage increases for thousands of workers in Connecticut who care for people with intellectual disabilities at group homes and day programs:

“The bipartisan action taken by the House today is a positive step toward averting a strike that would have many costs, both in terms of individual and family disruption and in financial costs – to the tune of $1 million per day during a strike – to the state. This agreement represent the best solution for the state and for the caregivers employed by providers of intellectual disability services. It has been far too long since these caregivers received a much-needed and much-deserved raise. We thank these hardworking women and men for their work and their patience with the legislative process, and for the legislators who had the courage to support them today. We are also want to thank Representative D’Agostino for ushering this agreement through today.”

The legislation is House Bill 5460, An Act Concerning Minimum Employee Wages for Providers of State-Contracted Human Services.

It was approved in the House by a bipartisan vote of 88-62. It next moves to the State Senate for consideration.
