Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Wyman on UConn President Herbst’s Decision to Leave Office Next Year
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman released the following statements regarding UConn President Susan Herbst’s decision to step down from her position with the university in the summer of 2019 at the conclusion of her eight-year employment agreement:
Governor Malloy said, “In her nearly seven years at the helm of UConn, Susan Herbst has proven to be a transformative and visionary President of our state’s flagship university. In her time leading UConn, President Herbst has spearheaded dramatic improvements and smart campus expansions, bringing UConn to seven consecutive years as one of the top 25 public universities in the country, most recently achieving its highest yet ranking at number 18. UConn is making its mark as a top-flight center for research thanks to forward-thinking, new partnerships with the state, including Next Generation Connecticut and Bioscience Connecticut – historic investments that have attracted companies like Jackson Labs, grown good-paying jobs for our residents, and turned our state into a bioscience hub. President Herbst was pivotal in bringing UConn to downtown Hartford, which is encouraging growth and attracting talented young people to our capital city. Although we’ll all be sad to see her go next year, she has left an indelible mark on the UConn community, and our state as a whole.”
Lt. Governor Wyman said, “I thank President Herbst for her dedication to our students and Connecticut’s flagship university. She’s been a strong and forward-thinking leader, and helped position UConn to attract the best and the brightest students from around the globe. UConn is thriving in our communities and is such an important part of the higher education system in Connecticut. I thank her for her service.”
