Gov. Malloy Statement on National Report Showing Connecticut is a Leader in Reducing Gun Violence

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement regarding the release of a national report today from the Violence Policy Center, which found that Connecticut ranks as one of the states with the lowest rates of gun deaths in 2016 and is among a handful of states that are seeing a decline in the rate of gun deaths:

“As Governor, the safety of Connecticut residents is always my top concern. Just recently, Connecticut was recognized for having the largest reduction in violent crime of any state over the last four years, and today, a report by the Violence Policy Center ranks Connecticut as the state with the fifth lowest firearm death rate – a rate that is less than half of the national average. In Connecticut, we pride ourselves on being a national model for sensible gun policy because we know that commonsense measures like background checks and banning the sale of military-style assault weapons save lives. Today’s report is proof-positive that our policies are working, but now is not the time to rest on our laurels. We still have work to do, so I hope that members of the General Assembly from both sides of the aisle will join me in supporting a ban on the sale and possession of bump stocks and continue the progress we have made in putting the safety of our residents first.”
