GOV. MALLOY: CON ED SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMMUTER REIMBURSEMENT
(Hartford, CT) - In a letter to Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast, Governor Dannel P. Malloy today urged the MTA Board of Directors to approve a refund plan for Connecticut customers of Metro-North. In particular, the Governor has suggested that Consolidated Edison bear the responsibility for underwriting customer refunds as a result of service disruption following the September 25 failure of a Con Ed feeder cable in Mount Vernon, N.Y.
"Not only has Metro-North service been severely disrupted, this incident has also caused disruption in the critical Boston-New York Corridor served by Amtrak. This incident has had an enormous - and unacceptable - impact on the economies of Connecticut and New York," Governor Malloy said in the letter dated October 1.
"In crafting the refund plan, I suggest your Board make it clear that it is Con Ed who is ultimately responsible, and that it is Con Ed who should underwrite the refunds, even as they are administered by MNR and MTA. Con Ed should also be responsible for any and all additional costs related to the interim service plan and the ultimate restoration of service."
The MTA board is to hold a special meeting this afternoon to consider approving a credit for customers of Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line.
