FRIDAY: GOV. MALLOY ATTENDS EVENTS IN EAST GRANBY, SOUTHINGTON AND HARTFORD
(HARTFORD, CT) - On Friday morning, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will visit the Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine in East Granby, where he will be joined by First Selectman Jim Hayden and the town's legislative delegation for a tour of the historic facility, which has been undergoing a major restoration project. New-Gate was one of the first copper mines in the British colonies, and after it was abandoned became the country's first prison in 1773. It is now a state museum and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The popular tourist destination has been closed for needed renovations since 2010 and is expected to reopen in May 2014.
In the afternoon, Governor Malloy will attend the annual Armed Forces Day Luncheon in Southington, where he will thank the men and women of Connecticut who serve in the United States Armed Forces for their service to our nation.
In the evening, Governor Malloy will give remarks at the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission's 7th annual Tribute to Hispanic Veterans ceremony.
Following that, Governor Malloy will give remarks at the African-American Affairs Commission's 14th annual Classic Awards.
