THURSDAY: GOV. MALLOY CONTINUES JOBS TOUR IN NEW HAVEN; SIGNS UCONN TECH PARK BILL IN STORRS
(HARTFORD, CT) - Continuing his Jobs Tour, on Thursday afternoon Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Department of Economic & Community Development Commissioner Catherine Smith will visit 360 State Street in New Haven, where they will take a tour of the new building, meet with its developers, and discuss its impact on the local economy and ideas to increase further job creation and business growth. 360 State Street is the redevelopment of a long-vacant 1.5 acre city-owned urban brownfield site that includes 500 rental apartments and 30,000 square feet of retail space. Completed in 2010, it was the largest residential project ever built in Connecticut, creating over 1,100 construction jobs and 122 permanent jobs for building operations and Elm City Market, located on the ground level.
Also on Thursday afternoon, Governor Malloy and Commissioner Smith will meet with member company representatives from Connecticut United for Research Excellence (CURE), a not-for-profit organization representing Connecticut's bioscience research organizations, including all of the state's biotech and pharmaceutical companies, medical device and biomedical companies and research institutions, including Yale University and the University of Connecticut. During the meeting, they will discuss potential for employment growth in Connecticut in the pharmaceutical, biotech, biomedical, medical device and life science research and development sectors. Together, CURE's member companies have 11,000 direct employees in the state.
Later Thursday, Governor Malloy will join legislators and state officials for a ceremonial signing of the University of Connecticut Tech Park bill. The legislation includes funding for the design, site development and infrastructure improvements necessary to create a technology park on the UConn campus that will eventually include multiple buildings to house large, flexible-use laboratories containing specialized equipment for collaborative research.
