Governor Lamont Says 5G Wireless Technology Is on the Horizon in Connecticut as His Proposal Receives Final Legislative Approval

6/05/2019

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont is applauding both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly for voting to approve legislation his administration drafted in consultation with industry experts that will accelerate the deployment of high-speed, 5G wireless technology in Connecticut.

When compared to today’s wireless networks, 5G networks are up to five times more responsive, up to 100 times faster, and allow up to 100 times more devices to be connected, opening up a multiple benefits for residents, businesses, public safety departments, and educational institutions.

While there is a process in place for placement of 5G infrastructure on utility poles and wires, in many high-density areas utility distribution infrastructure is undergrounded, thus alternative siting is needed to ensure adequate coverage. The legislation, which will be transmitted to the governor’s desk for his signature over the coming days, sets up a process to set 5G infrastructure on state property, and also establishes a process for municipalities that are interested in taking advantage of the technology.

“Access to ultra-fast internet speeds is critical to our economic future and the pursuit of good paying jobs for the residents of our state,” Governor Lamont said. “We’re putting in place processes that will allow the telecommunications companies to build the infrastructure they need to make 5G a reality, and ensure that low-cost, high-speed WiFi is available in all of our cities and small towns. Let’s take advantage of this technology by implementing it in Connecticut and give businesses access to the telecommunications services they need to conduct business in a 21st century economy.”

The legislation is House Bill 7152, An Act Accelerating the Deployment of 5G Wireless Facilities. It was adopted in the House of Representatives last night and received final approval in the State Senate tonight.
