Governor Lamont Directs Flags To Remain at Half-Staff Saturday for Peace Officers Memorial Day

5/13/2021

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to remain at half-staff on Saturday, May 15, 2021, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is a national observance paying tribute to local, state, and federal law enforcement officials who have died in the line of duty. It is recognized annually during National Police Week.

In addition to this announcement, flags in Connecticut are also currently at half-staff in honor of New Haven Firefighter Ricardo Torres, Jr., who died Wednesday in the line of duty while responding to an emergency. Following Saturday’s observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day, flags should remain at half-staff until sunset on the date of his interment, which has not yet been determined. The Office of the Governor will send out a notification when flags should be returned to full-staff.

“Law enforcement officials frequently put themselves in danger in the name of public protection, sometimes putting their own lives on the line in order to protect complete strangers,” Governor Lamont said. “We thank every law enforcement officer for the protection they provide in our neighborhoods, and we salute the fallen officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. Their memories will never be forgotten. We also salute all of the family members of law enforcement officials for the many sacrifices they make over the course of their loved one’s call to service.”

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to all of our law enforcement officials,” Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz said. “These men and women dedicate their lives to ensuring the safety of our communities. It is especially important that we remember the heroism of those who lost their lives while serving and protecting the citizens of our state and our country. We must pay tribute and honor them on Peace Officers Memorial Day and every day.”
