A Program to Assess Drinking Water Sources

The 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) ushered in a new era for the protection of public drinking water supplies. One provision of the Amendments, the Source Water Assessment Program or SWAP for short, calls for the assessment and protection of all public drinking water supply sources throughout the United States. Here in Connecticut, the Department of Public Health (DPH) is responsible for developing and implementing the state's Source Water Assessment Program. DPH, working in partnership with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), is making every effort to ensure that the state's SWAP program is tailored to conditions and needs specific to Connecticut's drinking water sources, which include of hundred's of water supply aquifers and reservoirs located throughout the state.
