Mercury Report

"Toward the Virtual Elimination of Mercury from the Solid Waste Stream" was submitted to the Governor and State legislature in response to Public Act 99-228.  The report provides recommendations for reducing mercury in solid waste including eliminating mercury from school science labs, requiring manufacturers to provide for the collection and recycling of their mercury containing products, and using household hazardous waste programs to collect elemental mercury from homes.  Recognizing that mercury is a regional concern, the report also supports model legislation that is designed to foster interstate cooperation in managing mercury.   The report provides projections of how much mercury can be eliminated from the waste stream through various product-specific strategies.
