DEEP Announces State Park Lifeguard Tryouts in March

(HARTFORD) — The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today announced tryouts for lifeguard positions at Connecticut State Parks for the Summer 2026 season. March isn’t just for college basketball. It’s also tryout season for Connecticut State Park Lifeguards. If you have what it takes to join our team of strong, highly trained, open-water lifeguards, meet us at the pool!

Tryouts will be held Tuesday, March 17, and Saturday, March 21, at the Middletown Recreation Center, 140 Wilderman’s Way, Middletown, CT. Candidates must apply online to receive an invitation for a time slot. The application, along with information regarding compensation and training requirements, is provided in the job posting online. Applicants must be at least 16 years old.

With several vacancies in the  New Fairfield, Torrington, and Watertown areas, DEEP encourages interested candidates to apply.

The tryout includes:

  • a distance swim and hands-free water treading;
  • an underwater swim;
  • a timed submerged weight retrieval; and
  • a strength assessment.

Lifeguard job opportunities are available at eight state parks across Connecticut. The Connecticut State Parks Division manages outdoor recreation opportunities at parks and forests statewide and has proudly staffed lifeguards at state beaches for more than a century. Connecticut State Park Lifeguards are highly trained professionals who help keep millions of visitors safe each summer.
