Final Days to Register for DEEP's 4th Connecticut Youth Climate Summit

High School Students Participate Virtually on March 26, 2024

(HARTFORD) — The registration deadline for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP)’s free online Connecticut Youth Climate Summit is only days away. The summit will take place on Tuesday, March 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This event marks the fourth virtual summit collaboratively developed with DEEP staff and a committee of young climate leaders from across the state. Teachers and other high school level educators are asked to register their schools and students no later than March 20, 2024.

The 4th Connecticut Youth Climate Summit is focused on developing Connecticut students’ environmental involvement in their communities. With more than 150 students already registered, the summit creates opportunities for high school students to come together with other students to learn skills and gather insight about climate advocacy practices. This half-day event helps high school students learn about providing climate-related school or community activities while developing leadership skills.

This year the program will feature keynote speaker Sena Wazer, Northeast Regional Organizer for The Climate Reality Project. Sena has a background in climate activism, which she gained while directing Sunrise CT, a youth-led organization focused on stopping climate change. Her involvement in climate action has included organizing marches, events, and speaking for climate action across the state and globally. Sena has worked on legislative bills, including the bill in 2022 making Connecticut the second state to require climate change education in public schools. She helped to set up the first youth summit in 2020 and is returning as the keynote to share how her experiences have developed her career pathway.

The afternoon panel features a collection of non-profit organizations with young people on boards and committees, which helps grow their organizations while developing the next generation of volunteers.

The summit will provide good opportunities for high school green teams and individual high school level students to learn about opportunities for future involvement. A maximum of eight (8) students per class may be registered.
