Emergency Burn Ban In Effect 10/26/24 - An emergency burn ban is now in effect for all Connecticut State Parks, Forests, and Wildlife Management areas, prohibiting the use of all outdoor grills, firepits, and campfires, and the kindling and use of flame outdoors. DEEP and local agencies are working to contain several active fires across the state. Please avoid all affected State Parks and Forests, as well as the blue-blazed Mattabesett Trail. The Enduro Trail in Voluntown and portions of North Stonington within the Pachaug State Forest are closed at this time. CT Environmental Conservation Police Make Arrest In Alleged Sexual Assault Case

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced this morning that Environmental Conservation Police (EnCon) officers have arrested an Old Saybrook man on charges of sexual assault following an investigation. 

Jay Rankin, of 2 Wisteria Lane, Old Saybrook, turned himself in to Officers at Troop D in Danielson earlier this morning, February 26. He was processed on a $50,000 bond and was turned over to Connecticut Superior Court GA 11 Danielson.  

In July 2023, EnCon Police were notified of a sexual assault within the town of Thompson, CT. The incident was reported to have occurred at the Little Pond Boat Launch. Based upon the investigating officers’ investigation, officers applied for and subsequently obtained an arrest warrant for the accused on charges of sexual assault.  

Rankin is charged with the following: C.G.S.53a-72a; Sexual Assault 3rd Degree, C.G.S.53a-73a; Sexual Assault 4th Degree, C.G.S.53a-186; Public Indecency, C.G.S.53a-181; Breach of Peace 2nd Degree, and R.C.S.A.26-16-1(I); Prohibited Activities in Limited Access Areas. 

Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
