4th Annual Pop of Color Outdoor Quilt Show Starts July 25th at Kellogg Estate in Osbornedale State Park

CT State Parks – Connecting Culture, Art, and the Outdoors

(HARTFORD) - The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced its fourth annual Pop of Color Outdoor Quilt Show returns to the Kellogg Estate, 500 Hawthorne Ave, Derby, CT, from Thursday, July 25 – Sunday, July 28, 2024, 10:00 a.m.– 4:00 p.m. Visitors can enjoy viewing a diverse collection of quilts hung to decorate the historic gardens and grounds. Reservations are not needed.

Mrs. Frances Kellogg bequeathed her property to the State of Connecticut, which is now Osbornedale State Park and the Kellogg Estate. She had a strong interest in arts and culture and the creative spirit of this textile display, Pop of Color, spotlights local quilters and the work they create as artists.  As part of the 2024 quilt show, visitors can enjoy viewing a special quilt created by the Southford Falls Quilt Guild - Crazy Quilt, The Cultural Diversity of the Naugatuck Valley.  This year-long project highlights the diversity of the valley through the fabrics of the people living in the valley, present and past. Members of the Guild, who provided a myriad of quilts for this year’s show, will be on hand to help welcome visitors and answer questions.  The stories of people and families, as told by quilts, are a most fascinating part of this art style.

Quilts will not be displayed outdoors during inclement weather, which includes high winds. Please call Kellogg Environmental Center at 203-734-2513 to verify if weather conditions are uncertain. Indoor options may be provided. Picnicking is allowed on the grounds and groups are welcome to join tours of the quilt show. Please let DEEP know if your guild or club would like to attend.

In addition to the display at the Kellogg Estate, the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Avenue, which has historical ties to Mrs. Frances Kellogg, partners with the Kellogg Estate’s Pop of Color show with a program and additional quilts on display at their site.  On Saturday, July 27, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., the Library will host a presentation by Tangular Irby, granddaughter of Gee’s Bend quilters, Pearlie Kennedy Pettway, and Jensie Lee Irby. Ms. Irby will read from her book “Pearl and her Gee’s Bend Quilt” and speak about the history and story of Gees Bend, legacy, and the importance of family. Registration is required. Please contact the Derby Neck Library for information on its program.

The Kellogg Estate is a CT State Park and Outreach facility of Connecticut DEEP and is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. It is composed of the Kellogg Environmental Center, estate grounds, historical gardens, and the Osborne Homestead Museum. The Museum is open for the peak season Thursday – Saturday, 10:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays 12:00 p.m.to 4:00 p.m. For further information or directions please email DEEP.kellogg@ct.gov or call the Kellogg Environmental Center at 203-734-2513.
