Regional Emergency Preparedness Exercise To Be Held in Connecticut’s Quiet Corner Sept. 25

Hazardous Materials Interstate Response Exercise in Putnam Links States, Regional, and Local Agencies

(HARTFORD)—The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services (Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and Connecticut Commission on Fire Prevention and Control), the Town of Putnam, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, and several eastern Connecticut local and regional hazardous materials incident response teams including DEMHS Region 4 and the Connecticut Eastern Region Response Integrated Team are gathering on Saturday, September 25th in Putnam to conduct a full-scale training exercise.

The training exercise’s purpose is to practice communications between local, regional, and state organizations, including crossing the border into Rhode Island for response activities.  The training exercise is a hands-on way of applying preparedness plans and strategies that individual response teams have developed.

The full-scale exercise will begin at 8 a.m. and is being held in collaboration with WIN Waste Innovations (formerly Wheelabrator) at their Putnam Ash Monofill site at 200 Technology Park Drive, Putnam, Connecticut; which is near Exit 45 off Interstate 395.

Insights from the day’s activities are used to modify strategies to continuously improve the ability to respond to incidents involving chemicals released during transportation.

The training is funded by an emergency preparedness grant from the United States Department of Transportation, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
