DEEP Accepting Grant Proposals for Clean Vessel Act program for 2022 Boating Season
Applications Due July 15; Program Helps Keep Boat Sewage Out of CT Waters
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is now accepting competitive grant proposals for the federal Clean Vessel Act (CVA) program for the 2022 boating season.
The CVA program, managed through DEEP’s Boating Division, provides federally funded matching grants for qualifying projects that provide boat sewage disposal facilities, more commonly known as pumpouts. During the 2020 boating season, pumpout facilities and pumpout vessel programs removed more than 1.2 million gallons of marine sewage from recreational vessels in Long Island Sound and Candlewood Lake.
“Through this important program, and with the support of Connecticut boaters and pumpout facility operators, we continue to provide boaters with a convenient way to keep more than 1 million gallons of marine sewage from being discharged into Connecticut’s waters each year,” DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes said. “With this latest round of grant opportunities, we plan to continue to build on this successful program to keep our waters clean and healthy for water-based recreation in Connecticut.”
Funding for the CVA Grant program comes from the Sport Fishing Restoration Fund, which is supported by excise taxes on certain fishing and boating equipment and boat fuels. DEEP partners with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and issues grants to partly fund various CVA marine facilities and programs. The marine facilities provide 25% of the cost of each funded project. The Connecticut CVA program is a nationally recognized program.
For the 2021 boating season, 36 marine facilities and pumpout vessel programs will receive $960,750 in funding under the CVA program to further improve water quality in Connecticut’s waters. Six of the 36 grant recipients will receive funding for the construction of new or replacement pumpouts. The remaining projects fund operation and maintenance of land based pumpouts and mobile pumpout boats.
Competitive grant proposals are now being accepted for the 2022 boating season. Applications are due on July 15, 2021. For more information about the CVA Program in Connecticut and how to apply for these grants, go here.
