DEEP Responds to Heating Oil Release in Avon
DEEP Emergency Response Unit personnel this evening responded to a heating oil release in Avon, the result of an accident involving an oil truck, at the location of Nod Road and East Main Street, at the base of Avon Mountain.
Staff reported the truck lost the total contents it was carrying- 3,000 gallons of #2 fuel oil- which ran down the street and into nearby catch basins which flow into wetlands and Nod Brook.
The owner of the truck has accepted responsibility, and Environmental Services, Inc. has been contracted to assist with clean-up.
The roadway is currently closed. Emergency response personnel on scene are working to clear the intersection ahead of the winter storm arriving tonight.
DEEP staff report that the oil has been contained just before the pond at a nearby golf course. Booms are in place containing the oil before it gets to the pond, which is a spillway into the Farmington River. The contractor has trucks on scene removing oil from the affected areas. Staff expect clean-up and containment efforts to continue over the next 48 hours.
Staff report that there are no private or public drinking water supplies impacted by this spill.
