First Progress Report and Last Four Goals of the 20BY20 Initiative Unveiled

Report Sets Baseline for Measurable Process Improvements in DEEP Regulatory Processes by the end of 2020

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) released the first quarterly report of the 20BY20 initiative, a set of 20 short-term high-impact agency goals aimed at providing greater predictability, efficiency, and transparency for environmental permitting and regulatory processes to be achieved by the end of 2020.

The first quarterly report highlights progress on the initiative since it was first announced in June, establishes baselines for the previously announced 16 goals, and unveils the last four goals of the initiative. Future quarterly reports will be released in January, April, July, and October of 2020 and highlight measurable process improvements towards achieving each goal.

The last four goals revealed this week were selected through consultation and input from the public and business community and include: increasing the transparency of environmental enforcement activities, seeking opportunities for innovative partnerships to enhance services of the agency, enhance use of financial assurance mechanisms as part of permitting and enforcement, and adopt spill-reporting regulations.

“A transparent, efficient regulatory process is the key to protecting environmental quality and growing our economy. Through the 20BY20 initiative, DEEP is laying the groundwork for measurable process improvements that will help DEEP succeed in this mission,” said DEEP Commissioner Katie Dykes.
