Kellogg Environmental Center - Birds in Hand Photography Exhibit Opens

The public is invited to the Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby, CT to enjoy a photo exhibit featuring the photography of Sophie Zyla.  Birds in Hand - Banding Birds at Manomet, a collection of photographs taken by Sophie during a spring banding season in Plymouth, MA will be on display until June 7.  These photos serve as a personal record of some of the amazing species recorded by Sophie as they migrated through New England.
Sophie is an avid birder and photographer, traveling and documenting wildlife across the globe.  Her passion for photography began in 1980 and has continued providing a wide collection of birds, plants, mammals and more from a variety of regions.  Her activity in birding and environmental education has combined to provide us with many educational displays featuring the science of wildlife photography and illustrating citizen science activities.  Through bird watching and especially banding, avian researchers are able to acquire large amounts of data using trained volunteers and avid naturalists such as Sophie.  Bird banding has provided decades of information on bird migration routes, specie’s population, longevity, preferred habitats for targeted protection, changes in health and reaction to climate changes.  Sophie has designed an exhibit that shows the diversity of bird species and the scientific data for them provided through decades of research. A great display for experienced and novice birders alike!
While visiting the exhibit we invite you to enjoy the grounds and gardens as they begin to bloom for spring. Scavenger hunts and activities for children and families are provided in the Kellogg Center to help you investigate birds and the outdoors. Children’s Bird Investigation kits are available to borrow. The Kellogg Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am – 4:30 pm and is free of charge.
