Pulling a building permit for a home improvement project

Read time: 6 minutes

Obtaining the appropriate building permit from your town is a requirement for many jobs and helps ensure your safety before and after the work is completed. Permits are an additional form of consumer protection, ensuring projects will be completed in accordance with the most up to date building codes.

Both parties must agree on who will obtain the building permit. The responsible party should be named in the contract.

If the contractor is responsible for the building permit: The homeowner should verify with their local building official that the appropriate permit has been obtained.

If the homeowner is responsible for the building permit: The homeowner should verify with the town that the build permit is approved before the work starts.
