Removal Requirements for Underground Storage Tanks
Home improvement contractors conducting residential underground heating oil storage tank (UST) removal or replacement must comply with the following:
- Maintain liability insurance coverage of one million dollars ($1,000,000); and
- Successful completion of both of the following Department of Energy and Environmental Protection approved Hazardous Material Training Programs:
- Occupational Safety & Heath Administration’s (OSHA’s) 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Training per 29 CFR 1910.120, and subsequent annual 8-hr refresher training; and
- International Codes Council’s (ICC’s) UST Tank Decommissioning U2 Training.
Note: UST refers to both a “residential underground heating oil storage tank system” and an “underground storage tank system” as defined in CT General Statutes 20-419.
