Gov. Malloy Submits Request for Federal Presidential Disaster Declaration in Response to May’s Tornadoes and Severe Storms
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has submitted a request for a federal presidential disaster declaration as a result of the tornadoes and severe storms that impacted parts of Connecticut on May 15. It follows several weeks of assessments and data collection conducted by state and local officials to calculate damages and determine whether the required federal qualifications have been met.
The request includes the two counties that have met the thresholds – New Haven and Fairfield Counties – as well as affected towns in Litchfield County. Preliminary damage estimates are still being collected for Litchfield County.
“As some towns continue with the recovery from the destructive weather, we asking the federal government to provide assistance to those that were devastated by the storms,” Governor Malloy said. “If granted, this declaration would provide much needed help to the communities that were most affected.”
The Governor’s request includes both FEMA public assistance and individual assistance. If the public assistance request is approved, affected towns and state agencies will receive federal reimbursement of 75 percent for eligible municipal and state costs. If the individual assistance request is approved, homeowners may receive up to a maximum of $34,000 for costs related to eligible uninsured damage to their housing.
The Governor will also be pursuing a Small Business Administration disaster loan program, which could provide low-interest loans to affected residents and businesses in the eligible counties.
