Gov. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Wyman Statements on Supreme Court Ruling in Women’s Healthcare Case

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman released the following statements regarding the 5-4 ruling released today in the U.S. Supreme Court case of NIFLA v. Becerra:

Governor Malloy said, “This decision is another example today of what is at stake in our nation’s elections. It should alarm all of us that the Supreme Court sided in favor of those who employ a troubling practice of denying women information regarding her health and her medical options. Rather than requiring those posing as healthcare providers to offer accurate and unbiased information, it creates the conditions for misleading and manipulating women seeking medical care. This erosion of a woman’s fundamental right is an affront to what we stand for as a nation. Moreover, this decision appears to be a break from previous Supreme Court decisions on other similar matters of doctors’ speech. That history only makes this outcome all the more troublesome. Taken all together, justice was sadly denied today for women and families.”

Lt. Governor Wyman said, “Withholding important healthcare information from pregnant women is just wrong. It’s bad policy, it’s bad for the health and well-being of women and their families, and it shows a fundamental lack of respect for all women – citizens who should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies without the input of government or the religious right. With so-called crisis pregnancy centers misleading and lying to women, barriers to scientifically-based medical information already exist. This decision builds those walls even higher.”
