What They’re Saying: Elected Officials and Business Leaders Show Support for State’s Partnership with Electric Boat

(HARTFORD, CT) – State elected officials and business leaders are voicing strong support for the long-term partnership Governor Malloy announced this morning between the State of Connecticut and General Dynamics Electric Boat, which will see the creation of nearly 1,900 new jobs and capital investments by the company of greater than $800 million.

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy:

“This is great news for jobs in our state. On Friday, I spent a day meeting with students and manufacturers across eastern Connecticut who are feeling firsthand the benefits of investing in submarine production. This commitment by the state, partnered with our ongoing federal support, will solidify Connecticut’s future as the Submarine Capitol of the World.”

Congressman John Larson:

“This is amazing news for the First District and the entire State of Connecticut. The First District is a leader in the supply chain for the United States Submarine Force and I am proud of the work done by our manufacturers. I thank Governor Malloy, Congressman Joe Courtney, and the entire Connecticut delegation for their work to support our defense manufacturing base and Electric Boat for continuing to invest in our great state.”

New London Mayor Michael Passero:

“New London is poised to benefit immensely from the Governor’s announcement of the State’s new partnership to facilitate Electric Boat’s growth. The state’s partnership will reinforce and further ignite investment in New London, especially in the housing sector. I am appreciative of this initiative by the Governor and his team, including Labor Commissioner Scott Jackson’s commitment to training our local workforce and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Smith’s support for the local supply chain. New London is prepared to fulfill its role as a key partner in the success of EB and our region.”

Speaker of the House Joe Aresimowicz (D-Berlin, Southington):

“Electric Boat is part of Connecticut’s economic heritage and continues to be the driving engine of the state’s thriving defense industry sector. Investing in their continued growth will not only bolster EB’s job numbers, but also help create new opportunities throughout their vast supplier chain.”

State Representative Christine Conley (D-Groton, Ledyard):

“The state and Electric Boat are working in unison to ensure a strong economic future for southeastern Connecticut. Investing in the company’s infrastructure and job training programs allow EB to grow its workforce and meet the demands of Pentagon contracts. Making this happen shows how the region’s legislative delegation has made economic growth and stability its number one priority.”

State Representative Joe de la Cruz (D-Groton, New London):

“Manufacturing has taken off once again in Connecticut and we’re moving to keep that momentum going. What you see here today is a partnership benefiting the state and EB. In addition, by adding more job training programs we will provide EB with the well-educated and skilled workforce the company needs to meet demand.”

State Representative Chris Soto (D-New London):

“Today’s jobs announcement at Electric Boat further illustrates our state’s need for a skilled workforce, specifically in Southeastern Connecticut. New London serves as the region’s hub and I stand ready to work with our partners to meet that need.”

John Beauregard, President and CEO of the Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board:

“The Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board strongly supports this partnership between the State of Connecticut and Electric Boat for its strategic vision relative to the economic impact of workforce development. This collaboration will significantly boost our region’s Eastern Connecticut Manufacturing Pipeline Initiative, a workforce development prototype that has placed 1,000 enrollees in jobs since its inception two years ago. We congratulate the Governor and Electric Boat for their leadership and focus on sustaining this innovative public-private partnership that will have an enduring impact for our region’s workforce and economy for the foreseeable future.”

Christopher Jewell, Chief Financial Officer and Principal of Collins & Jewell Company, a manufacturing company headquartered in Bozrah:

“We at Collins & Jewell are very excited to see the State of Connecticut’s commitment to Electric Boat in assisting them with their upcoming major infrastructure changes. We think this sends a clear message to not only EB but also to the U.S. Navy that Eastern Connecticut is getting poised for the upcoming inflow of manufacturing work. We are confident that this investment will trickle down to sub tier vendors such as ourselves and will allow us to grow our businesses over the upcoming years. We are also encouraged that a block of this support is directed to workforce development, which is good for the entire region.”
