GOV. MALLOY ANNOUNCES JAMES P. REDEKER WILL CONTINUE LEADING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he will re-appoint James P. Redeker as Commissioner of the Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) when his second term in office begins on January 7, 2015.
"Since taking over at ConnDOT, Commissioner Redeker has demonstrated the kind of expertise, forward thinking and leadership ability it takes to bring our transportation infrastructure into the 21st Century," said Governor Malloy. "With Commissioner Redeker at the helm, we are making investments now that are laying the foundation for a more modern, efficient and accessible transportation network that will drive economic growth throughout the state - investments that will not only benefit us in the short-term, but 20, 30 and 40 years down the road. I look forward to continue working together to make this vision a reality."
Prior to being named Commissioner, Redeker was Chief of ConnDOT's Bureau of Public Transportation, responsible for planning and management of ConnDOT's rail and bus programs. Commissioner Redeker joined ConnDOT in 2008 after a 30-year career with the New Jersey Department of Transportation and NJ Transit - the third-largest transit agency in the country.

Major projects and accomplishments by ConnDOT, under Commissioner Redeker's leadership, include:

ConnDOT exceeded its goal of advertising $1 billion worth of bids on construction projects by 20 percent in the last federal fiscal year, which ended September 30th, advertising $1.2 billion in bids for 107 individual projects across Connecticut.

ConnDOT has resurfaced 305 two-lane miles of roadways this construction season - about 63 miles more than during the 2013 construction season - marking the third consecutive year of increases in road resurfacing since Governor Malloy took office.

Since 2011, Connecticut has received five federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grants totaling $53.1 million to invest in road, rail, transit and port projects that promise to achieve critical national and regional transportation objectives.

CTfastrak - a rapid-transit bus system that will run between Hartford and New Britain, will add 10 new stations in New Britain, Newington, West Hartford and Hartford to support the corridor's current ridership of 11,000 per day - is on time and on budget and scheduled for completion in March 2015.

The New Haven-Hartford-Springfield line , now the "Hartford Line", will operate as a commuter rail line and, upon completion, will offer 25 round trips a day, with half-hourly service during peak hours - a contrast to the 6 round trips currently provided by Amtrak.

TransformCT is a collaboration between ConnDOT and the general public, state and regional agencies, state legislators and local public officials to develop a Strategic Plan for transportation that redefines Connecticut's future and charts a path for a more prosperous, sustainable, and livable state.
ConnDOT is comprised of six bureaus - Aviation & Ports, Finance & Administration, Highway Operations, Policy & Planning, Engineering & Construction and Public Transportation - and employs around 3,000 people across the state. CTTransit, the state-owned bus service, and the New Haven Line, the state-owned commuter rail service, each carry more than 35 million passengers a year. The bureau also oversees Shore Line East, the commuter rail service between New Haven and New London, and coordinates ridesharing programs for Connecticut employers.
