FRIDAY: GOV. MALLOY PARTICIPATES IN MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL ON FEDERAL TRANSPORTATION BILL; ATTENDS NEWS CONFERENCE ON HIGHER EDUCATION ACCESS & READINESS
(HARTFORD, CT) - On Friday at noon, Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, California, who also serves as President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, will hold a media conference call urging the House-Senate conference to move forward without further delay on reaching agreement on the transportation reauthorization legislation. The current transportation extension will expire on June 30, and the conference report must be passed and signed into law before then. Each day that passes by without reauthorization only deepens the depth of uncertainty in infrastructure financing, forcing state and local governments across the country to postpone the construction of needed projects with adverse jobs consequences.
Later, Governor Malloy will attend a news conference in Waterbury to highlight the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program) grant the state received to improve college access and readiness for Connecticut's students. Connecticut was awarded the seven-year, $31.5 million grant, which will be used to significantly increase the number of low-income students prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education and will be used to provide scholarships for eligible high school seniors. It will serve 3,000 students attending 12 middle schools in East Hartford, New Haven and Waterbury through 2019, and will follow these students through middle school, high school and their first year of college.
