THURSDAY: GOV. MALLOY DONATES BLOOD; HOLDS CEREMONIAL SIGNING OF JACKSON LABS BILL; ATTENDS AGRICULTURAL MEETING; SPEAKS AT EDUCATION WORKSHOP; ATTENDS TOWN HALL MEETING IN NORWICH
(HARTFORD, CT) - On Thursday at 11:00 a.m., Governor Dannel P. Malloy will visit the American Red Cross Blood Center in Farmington, where he will donate blood as the organization kicks off National Blood Donor Month. The month of January typically presents the most challenges for blood collection, and the Red Cross is encouraging eligible first-time and regular donors to give blood.
At 12:00 p.m., Governor Malloy will hold a news conference and ceremonial signing of the Jackson Laboratory bill at the UConn Health Center in Farmington, where he will be joined by Jackson Laboratory President and CEO Dr. Edison Liu, University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst, Department of Economic & Community Development Commissioner Catherine Smith, local legislators and other officials. The legislation provides funding for Jackson Laboratory's new personalized medicine project on the campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center - a project that will create 6,800 permanent jobs associated with the facility.
At 2:30 p.m., Governor Malloy will give remarks at the first meeting of the reshaped Governor's Council for Agricultural Development, a council that advises the Department of Agriculture on ways to increase consumer consumption of Connecticut grown products. The council was restructured last year following approval of Public Act 11-189.
At 4:30 p.m., Governor Malloy will give closing remarks at the Governor's Education Workshop , where he will speak about his plans to introduce education reform legislation during the upcoming 2012 regular session of the General Assembly.
At 7:00 p.m., Governor Malloy will attend "A Conversation with the Governor," a town hall meeting in Norwich hosted by Ray Hackett of The Bulletin, where he will answer questions on the one year anniversary of his inauguration as Connecticut's 88th governor. This public event will stream live on the internet .
