Gina Barreca
Author, Columnist, Humorist and Professor of English
will be the featured speaker at State Manager's Day 2006
Gina Barreca received the 1998 Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Connecticut's Institute for Teaching and Learning. She is a full Professor of English Literature and Feminist Theory at UConn. Dr. Barreca has served as an advisor to the Library of Congress for work on humor and the American character. An award-winning columnist for The Hartford Courant, she has also regularly published articles in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Chicago Tribune, and dozens of magazines. Dr. Barreca is also the author of the best-selling They Used to Call Me Snow White, But I Drifted (now in its 19th printing); Perfect Husbands and Other Fairy Tales; Sweet Revenge: The Wicked Delights of Getting Even; and a collection of essays, Too Much of a Good Thing is Wonderful. Her works have been translated into Chinese, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Japanese. Most recently, she edited the Penguin Book of Women's Humor; Don't Tell Mama: The Penguin Book of Italian American Writing (named one of 2002's best books by NPR); and A Sit-Down with The Sopranos: Watching Italian American Culture on T.V.; as well as writing, with cartoonist Nicole Hollander, The ABC of Vice: An Insatiable Women's Guide. In 2004, she coauthored, with the Washington Post's Gene Weingarten, I'm with Stupid: One Man, One Woman, and 10,000 Years of Misunderstanding between the Sexes Cleared Right Up. Her most recent book is Babes in Boyland: A Personal History of Co-Education in the Ivy League (UPNE 2005).
