Family Council Presentation

The 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act guarantees that families of nursing home residents have rights and ways to protect and enhance the quality of life and care provided by nursing homes.  A key right is that the families may form and regularly meet privately as an organized group.  This organized group may call itself a family council and the facility has the obligation to listen to the views of the family council and to address grievances and recommendations brought forth by the family council.

The Connecticut Long Term Care Ombudsman Program hopes that this presentation will provide you further information and ideas to form your own family council at your loved one’s nursing home.

The Ombudsman Program is grateful to the University of Connecticut, Organizational and Skill Development Unit at the CT Department of Social Services for its assistance in developing this web-based training program.
