Vaccines against human papillomavirus (HPV) are safe, effective, and have been recommended in the United States since 2006 but coverage remains unacceptably low. Lack of protection provided by vaccination leaves adolescents vulnerable to six types of cancer later in life. In this presentation, we will discuss the challenges that clinicians may face in providing effective recommendations for vaccination, and we will provide information and strategies to overcome these barriers. We will also present information about the current status of coverage in Connecticut, and local barriers that have been identified.

HPV Vaccine Reluctance: Talking with Parents

HPV vaccination rates are well below other vaccines administered during adolescence. Connecticut’s own rate is at an anemic 43%. Many times, parents hesitate to approve this vaccination for a variety of reasons. This webinar will review the CDC recommendations for HPV vaccines. With up to 80% of oropharyngeal cancers in the U.S. caused by infection with the HPV virus, the program will outline the surprising relationships between low HPV vaccination rates and increases in adult head and neck cancer cases. Because HPV vaccines bring up difficult issues of sexuality, discussions with parents and teens can be challenging. This program will offer providers with specific strategies for addressing patient or parent reluctance.
