Netflix original series “13 Reasons Why”
The Netflix original series “13 Reasons Why”, based on a popular novel of the same name, was released on March 31, 2017 and has been much talked about, particularly among school-aged youth. The fictional story is a cautionary tale of a young girl’s suicide, and covers other sensitive subject matters as the series progresses such as sexual abuse, rape, substance abuse, mental health, and bullying. The show sensationalizes suicide, focuses on reasons to die vs. reasons to live, and blames survivors, all of which can easily trigger at risk individuals.

The new funding is part of the 21st Century Cures Act signed by President Obama on December 13, 2016.

For the second year in a row, heroin was the most frequently reported primary drug upon admission for substance abuse treatment.

DMHAS Launches Remembrance Quilt in Memory of Those Who Died of Addiction
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) Commissioner Miriam Delphin-Rittmon today launched a Remembrance Quilt at TOIVO in Hartford to honor loved ones who have died from substance use disorders, or addiction. Family, friends and loved ones are encouraged to create a square in the name of a loved one who died of a substance use disorder to be added to The Remembrance Quilt. The squares will then be joined together by quilting guilds who have volunteered their time and talent. The quilts will be displayed across the state to pay tribute to those who died and help raise awareness about this terrible disease.
Gov. Malloy Proposes Legislative Package to Further the State’s Efforts Combating Opioid Addiction and Overdoses
Governor Dannel P. Malloy – in his first legislative proposals of the 2017 session – today unveiled a package of statutory reforms he is proposing that focus on efforts to reduce the potential for people to become addicted to opioid medications that could cause a life-threatening overdose. The proposals build upon a series of reforms the Governor has signed into law on the issue since 2011.

Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the State of Connecticut is receiving $5.5 million federal grant to expand the state’s efforts to combat the prescription opioid and heroin crisis. The funding is being awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and will be used by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) to increase access to treatment, reduce unmet treatment need, and reduce opioid-related overdose deaths.

Saturday, April 29th is National Drug Take Back Day, and the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), with the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), is encouraging organizations to host drug take back events for residents. National Drug Take Back Day events involve the disposal of prescription medication, and events must be coordinated with local police departments and DCP’s Drug Control Division.
New Program Connects Overdose Victims to Recovery Coaches
New London, CT – At an event this morning at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) announced its partnership with Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) and four area hospitals in a new program which sends recovery coaches to Emergency Departments in response to overdoses. The recovery coaches will assist people who are admitted with opioid overdose and other alcohol- or drug-related medical emergencies and connect them to substance use disorder treatment and services in the state.

Thursday, April 27th — This Saturday, April 29th, is National Drug Take Back Day, and the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) and the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) are encouraging residents to dispose of their unused medications. Families should set aside some time on their calendar this weekend, and make safe drug disposal an important part of their routines in the future.

Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Launches Website Providing Real-Time Bed Availability for Addiction Services
The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) today announced the launch of a new website which provides real-time information on bed availability for addiction services. The website gives users real-time information of availability for approximately 1,000 DMHAS-funded beds including detoxification services, residential addiction treatment and recovery housing. The information on the website will be updated by providers multiple times throughout the day.

State Provides Hospital Emergency Departments with Naloxone
The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), with assistance from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) and Connecticut Hospital Association, announced today that all hospital emergency departments (ED) in Connecticut now have naloxone available for distribution to patients and loved ones upon discharge through a federal grant. Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, is a life-saving medication used in the event of an opioid overdose.
