The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) today released its Annual Statistical Report which provides information about the services the Department provides and the individuals served by the DMHAS mental health and substance abuse system. For the second year in a row, heroin was the most frequently reported primary drug upon admission for substance abuse treatment.

DMHAS Launches Remembrance Quilt in Memory of Those Who Died of Addiction |
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) Commissioner Miriam Delphin-Rittmon today launched a Remembrance Quilt at TOIVO in Hartford to honor loved ones who have died from substance use disorders, or addiction. Family, friends and loved ones are encouraged to create a square in the name of a loved one who died of a substance use disorder to be added to The Remembrance Quilt. The squares will then be joined together by quilting guilds who have volunteered their time and talent. The quilts will be displayed across the state to pay tribute to those who died and help raise awareness about this terrible disease.

Gov. Malloy Proposes Legislative Package to Further the State’s Efforts Combating Opioid Addiction and Overdoses |
Governor Dannel P. Malloy – in his first legislative proposals of the 2017 session – today unveiled a package of statutory reforms he is proposing that focus on efforts to reduce the potential for people to become addicted to opioid medications that could cause a life-threatening overdose. The proposals build upon a series of reforms the Governor has signed into law on the issue since 2011.

Gov. Malloy Announces $5.5 Million in Federal Grants for Connecticut’s Efforts to Combat the Opioid Crisis |
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the State of Connecticut is receiving $5.5 million federal grant to expand the state’s efforts to combat the prescription opioid and heroin crisis. The funding is being awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and will be used by the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) to increase access to treatment, reduce unmet treatment need, and reduce opioid-related overdose deaths.

Saturday, April 29th is National Drug Take Back Day, and the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), with the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), is encouraging organizations to host drug take back events for residents. National Drug Take Back Day events involve the disposal of prescription medication, and events must be coordinated with local police departments and DCP’s Drug Control Division.

New Program Connects Overdose Victims to Recovery Coaches |
New London, CT – At an event this morning at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) announced its partnership with Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) and four area hospitals in a new program which sends recovery coaches to Emergency Departments in response to overdoses. The recovery coaches will assist people who are admitted with opioid overdose and other alcohol- or drug-related medical emergencies and connect them to substance use disorder treatment and services in the state.

Families should set aside some time on their calendar this weekend, and make safe drug disposal an important part of their routines in the future.

Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Launches Website Providing Real-Time Bed Availability for Addiction Services |
The Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) today announced the launch of a new website which provides real-time information on bed availability for addiction services. The website gives users real-time information of availability for approximately 1,000 DMHAS-funded beds including detoxification services, residential addiction treatment and recovery housing. The information on the website will be updated by providers multiple times throughout the day.
