Crimes Analysis Unit

The Crime Analysis Unit provides various analytical services to the Connecticut State Police, the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Connecticut municipal police departments, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the media, and other consumers of Connecticut crime and traffic statistics.

The Crime Analysis Unit oversees several state-mandated programs, including the Connecticut Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, also referred to as the National Incident-Based Reporting Program (NIBRS), the Connecticut Family Violence Reporting Program, and the Connecticut Bias (Hate) Crime Reporting Program. In addition to these mandated programs, the Crime Analysis Unit maintains statistical and summary data on motor vehicle enforcements, accidents, and related traffic events handled by the Connecticut State Police.

Connecticut Crime Data Repository

The Connecticut Crime Data Repository contains all crimes and arrests from 2014 to date that were reported to the Crimes Analysis unit by the 108 participating law enforcement agencies across the state. Those agencies include Connecticut State Police, municipalities with police departments, universities, tribal agencies, and special jurisdictions. The repository contains both Incident-Based Reporting System (IBRS) and Summary Reporting System (SRS) data.

The Summary Reporting System (SRS) was retired by the FBI on January 1, 2021 and all Connecticut law enforcement agencies were fully transitioned at that time. Prior to 2021, some agencies were still only reporting SRS formatted data, therefore it is recommended that SRS data be used prior to 2021 to examine crime statewide. IBRS data from 2021 forward is rolled-up to SRS data for year-over-year comparison purposes.
