DEEP Seeks Qualified Volunteers to Fill LEP Board Vacancies

Board of Licensed Environmental Professionals Plays Important Role in Remediation of Contaminated Properties, Applicants from Diverse Backgrounds Strongly Encouraged to Apply

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is seeking qualified individuals to fill three vacancies on the State Board of Examiners of Licensed Environmental Professionals (LEP Board).

The volunteer LEP Board plays a very important role, overseeing the environmental professionals who are charged with ensuring the proper characterization and remediation of contaminated property in Connecticut, the first step in transforming such properties back into safe and productive sites.

By state statute, the board is composed of eleven members- the DEEP Commissioner or their designee, who serves as chair, and ten members appointed by the Governor. The LEP Board is staffed with volunteer members in accordance with the qualifications described in Section 22a-133v(b) of the Connecticut General Statutes.

Responsibilities for the LEP Board members include participation in once-a-month LEP Board meetings (currently held via Zoom), decision-making about the future of the program as Connecticut transitions to a Release-Based Cleanup Program, working with other board members in the development of testing materials for prospective LEPs, reviewing complaints against current LEPs, approving continuing education credit courses used to maintain license accreditation and reviewing prospective candidates’ applications, and providing education and outreach to the LEP community.

Applicants from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. The board vacancies, and the statutorily required qualifications, are:

Opportunity 1:  The LEP Board has a current vacancy for an individual who is an active member of an organization that promotes the protection of the environment including those working with grassroots organizations to address disparate impacts in our urban communities.

Opportunity 2:  The LEP Board has a second vacancy, for an individual who is a currently licensed environmental professional and a professional engineer who intends to continue to maintain their licenses through the period that they would serve as a volunteer board member.

Opportunity 3:  The LEP Board will have a third vacancy, on June 1, 2021, for an individual who is a currently licensed environmental professional who intends to continue to maintain their license through the period that they would serve as a volunteer board member.

If one of the above volunteer opportunities aligns with your experience and you are interested in building connections and enjoy meaningful public service please apply using this link https://www.jobapscloud.com/CT/sup/bulpreview.asp?R1=190219&R2=1234BC&R3=BCM in the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services (DAS) portal.
