Secretary Thomas Honors Connecticut Towns with Highest Voter Turnout
Cornwall, East Hampton, Fairfield and Stamford Awarded 2024 Democracy Cup
(Hartford, Connecticut) — Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas recently presented Democracy Cup awards to local officials in four Connecticut municipalities for having the highest voter turnouts in the November 2024 elections.
Given in even-numbered years and based on town size, 2024 Democracy Cups were awarded to:
- Cornwall in the Small-Town category (fewer than 10,000 people) with a turnout of 90.46%
- Runners-up in this category were Lyme with 89.26%, Colebrook with 89.18%, Chester with 88.68%, and New Hartford with 88.58%
- East Hampton in the Medium Town category (10,000 to 30,000 people) with a turnout of 89.64%
- Runners-up in this category were Somers with 88.37%, Oxford with 87.47%, Newtown with 87.45%, and Cheshire with 86.60%
- Fairfield in the Large Town category (30,000 to 65,000 people) with a turnout of 84.55%
- Runners-up in this category were Greenwich with 84.10%, Glastonbury with 83.61%, Wallingford with 83.53%, and West Hartford with 82.69%

- Runners-up in this category were Norwalk with 72.92%, Danbury with 68.15%, New Britain with 67.95%, and New Haven with 63.35%
The Democracy Cup recognizes the civic engagement and commitment to democracy of these Connecticut towns and highlights the importance of voting in our democracy. By highlighting turnout, it also encourages residents to vote and take pride in their institutions.
Secretary Thomas credited in-person early voting as one of the drivers of increased turnout this election, along with the hard work of hundreds of registrars of voters, moderators, poll workers, and volunteers before, during, and after election day.
“High voter turnout is never accidental,” Secretary Thomas said. “It’s the result of a whole community pulling together to ensure everyone’s voice is heard. This requires not just fully engaged voters, but a town leadership that encourages getting involved, bringing people to the table, and election administrators that take every step to make voting as welcoming and smooth as possible. Good communications, information, convenient early voting, well-maintained voting lists, they all play a role – and these four towns have set an example for all to follow.”
The 2024 Democracy Cup winners are allowed to keep and display their trophies until the 2026 election.
