Secretary Thomas Applauds Passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of Connecticut
(Hartford, CT) – Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas applauds the passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of Connecticut with the following statement:
“The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of Connecticut will serve to dismantle barriers that hinder access to the polls and empower eligible voters with the resources and tools they need to cast their ballot, regardless of language or background,” said Secretary Thomas. “Through this Act, Connecticut will become a model for expanded voter protections and, in the absence of stronger federal voter protection laws, cements the fundamental right of every eligible citizen to vote in our state.”
The original legislation is Senate Bill 1226, An Act Concerning State Voting Rights in Recognition of John R. Lewis, and was included as part of the state’s biennial budget, House Bill 6941. The final bill must still be signed into law by Governor Lamont.
