Secretary Thomas Applauds House Passage of Early Voting Legislation, Says Vote A 'Momentous Occasion' For Expanding Voting Access in Connecticut
(Hartford, CT) – Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas applauded the Connecticut House of Representatives’ for their passage of legislation to implement an early voting program in Connecticut next year.
“This is a momentous occasion for expanded voting access for eligible voters in Connecticut, and it is the product of hard work on the parts of many individuals. I thank the House of Representatives and the GAE Committee for their tireless dedication this Legislative Session in getting this important legislation closer to the finish line,” said Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas. “I’m optimistic that the Senate will likewise successfully pass this bill.”
Secretary Thomas added that she will continue working with the Governor, legislators, and nonpartisan budget staff to ensure that the upcoming budget accounts for the realistic costs that early voting will create, so as not to allow any burden to be pushed onto the municipalities.
“I remain optimistic that the appropriate funding will be allocated in the budget for this program and look forward to listening to our registrars and clerks as we work to implement early voting in 2024,” Thomas said.
In 2022, over 60% of Connecticut voters passed the constitutional amendment for early voting, allowing our state to join the 46 others currently allowing voters to cast a ballot before Election Day.
