SECRETARY OF THE STATE DENISE MERRILL MAKES STATEMENT ON U.S. SUPREME COURT DECISION OVERTURNING ROE V. WADE
I could not be more disappointed in the highly partisan Supreme Court of the United States and its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which effectively overturns Roe V. Wade, nearly five decades of settled law.
Today, the Supreme Court all but confirmed that women are nothing more than second-class citizens and that we are incapable of controlling our own lives or making decisions about our own bodies.
I fear this devastating decision will affect poor women the most, along with doctors and health care providers. In some of the states in this divided country, today’s ruling takes effect immediately. Fortunately, it does not prohibit a woman from traveling to another state to seek the care they need.
I am proud that in Connecticut, we have taken steps to ensure that the right to choose to have an abortion will remain protected.
