SECRETARY OF THE STATE DENISE MERRILL MAKES STATEMENT ON 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF TITLE IX

Today marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX which states that no person in the United States shall, based on sex, be excluded from participation in, or be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.

While many equate Title IX with sports, its reach also includes sexual harassment, gender-based discrimination and sexual violence.

With respect to equality in sports, many would say we have come a long way since Title IX’s passage in 1972, but still have a long way to go.

I would say we have a very long way to go when it comes to protections for women, particularly in the areas of discrimination, violence, and sexual harassment. It’s been an ongoing fight and it appears it will be that way for a while – but we need to keep fighting. I also stand with President Biden who is looking to expand Title IX regulations to include protecting LGBTQ residents from discrimination.”
