Secretary Merrill Statement on Federal Voting Rights Legislation

“Disagreeing about who to vote for is part of a healthy democracy; disagreeing that it is wrong to make it more difficult for eligible voters to register, cast their ballots, and make their voices heard is not.

There had been bipartisan consensus for more than three decades, as evidenced by reauthorizations of the Voting Rights Act in 1970, 1975, 1982, 1992, and 2006 by overwhelming margins, that the United States should dismantle unnecessary obstacles to voting.

The United States Senate will soon be debating legislation that will make voting more convenient for every eligible American voter. This is our opportunity, maybe our last opportunity, to pass these bills and restore that bipartisan consensus, and we cannot afford to waste it.”
