Secretary Merrill Announces Launch of electionhistory.ct.gov

electionhistory.ct.gov is a database of Connecticut federal, state, and local races with results from elections as early as 1787

HARTFORD - Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill today announced the launch of electionhistory.ct.gov, a comprehensive history of official election statistics that everyday people and researchers can use to monitor the health of civic life in Connecticut with just a few clicks of the mouse. Currently, electionhistory.ct.gov has results from every state and federal general election from 1787 to the present, and municipal elections from 2001 to the present. Statewide primary election results are available starting with 1998, and more will be added in the coming weeks.

“Connecticut citizens, researchers, professors, and media deserve access to the best historical data that our state can provide,” Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said. “Electionhistory.ct.gov will provide that data, from the election of George Washington to today. A strong and healthy civic community can only exist where voters have free access to all the information that they need to make informed decisions, and I am proud to ensure that they will have that access to our shared historical election results.”

The development of electionhistory.ct.gov was the result of a partnership between the Office of the Secretary of the State and Civera Software. Much of the data was provided by the Connecticut State Library and A New Nation Votes at Tufts University.

“At Civera, we believe that generous access to vital government data is a fundamental human right,” said Adam Friedman, founder of Civera Software. “Secretary Merrill shares this philosophy and, through her work promoting civic health and engagement, is a national leader on bringing a data-driven approach to improving civic life and electoral health. The Civera team was thrilled to partner with the Secretary of the State of Connecticut to advance this mission.”

For every political district, voters will be able to look up:

Voter registration, party enrollment, and turnout rates
Competitiveness of federal, state, and local candidate races
Candidates' winning thresholds
The results of state and local ballot measures
Candidates' entire track record in state and federal elections, as well as recent local elections

Covering 235 years of history, electionhistory.ct.gov contains a substantial inventory of vital civic data:

49,599 candidate profiles
30,601 candidate contests
1,137 ballot measures
109 snapshots of voter statistics

Civera Software provides technology to make democracy and civic data easier for everyday citizens to access and use.
The mission of the Connecticut State Library is to preserve and make accessible Connecticut’s history and heritage and to advance the development of library services statewide. The State Library provides a variety of library, information, archival, public records, museum, and administrative services for citizens of Connecticut, as well as for the employees and officials of all three branches of State government.

A New Nation Votes is a searchable collection of election returns from the earliest years of American democracy, compiled by Philip Lampi and published online by the American Antiquarian Society and Tufts University Digital Collections and Archives with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
